"It is obvious when people take the time to prepare for an interview, it is even more obvious when they don’t."

There are many things you can do to better prepare yourself for an employment interview. Impress the potential employer with your knowledge of their company (back to your preliminary research again!!) and how well you can present your skills and qualifications.

What specific things can you do to prepare for your interview?

  • Anticipate and prepare for interview questions (see list of typical questions and effective answers)

  • Prepare short story (1 – 2 minutes) examples to use when answering behavioural interview questions (tell me about a time you worked effectively as part of a team). It helps to practice with a friend or family member or in front of the mirror

  • Pick out your interview outfit the day before, make sure your clothes are clean and pressed

  • Take a dry run, find out where the interview will take place and take a trip to the location before your interview, see how long it will take you to get there, where you can park, where the closest bus stop is, etc.

Take an ‘interview package’ with you, including:

Copies (we suggest three) of your resume and cover letters

Paper and pen for notes

A copy of the research you have done, the information you have found out about the company (very useful when they ask you "what do you know about our company?")

A list of questions to ask the employer

Copies of relevant documentation (Certificates, Diplomas, etc.)

Letters of reference and a list of references who are willing to speak on your behalf

A smile and positive attitude!!!!!
