New Canadians

The Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre understands the difficulties associated with moving to a new country, and so we provide services to help new Canadians. If you're a recent immigrant looking for work, sign up for our Job Search Workshop. It's a program specifically designed to help immigrants find employment in Canada. Find out what people have said about this workshop.

We also understand how hard it can be to know what public services are available to you in a new community. To help you become familiar with the Durham Region, we've put together a list of links that you might find useful.

Healthcare in Durham Region

Obtaining your Health Card

There is generally a three-month waiting period between applying for your Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP) card, and receiving it. During this period, newcomers should obtain outside health insurance from a private insurance company.

After this time, OHIP cardholders have health insurance that is covered across Canada.
